1000 PAPER CRANES SHOW SCHEDULE 2008:

JUNE 9TH AT MURPHY SCHOOL 3539 W GRACE CHICAGO

1000 Paper Cranes, a drama inspired by the true story of Sadako Sasaki, and the novel for young readers by Eleanor Coerr, is performed by The Corcoran School Of Theater Arts Performance Ensemble class.  Sadako Sasaki was two years old when the nuclear bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. Like thousands of other children Sadako remained healthy for many years. However, at the age of ten she developed leukemia (the atom bomb) disease. She fought the disease and throughout her long hospitalization, folded origami cranes, believing in the Japanese legend that if a sick person folds 1000 paper cranes they will become well again. Before the onset of her disease Sadako was an avid and unusually fast runner. She was admired by her school mates for her discipline and determination as an athlete. Sadako succumbed to leukemia but her classmates refused to let her story die. They continued to fold cranes and tell her story. They collected money for a monument to her and it was erected in Hiroshima Peace Park and still stands today a representation of all the children killed by the atom bomb. Every year children from Japan and around the world pile millions of paper cranes at the foot of her monument. Sadako has become a reminder of the horror of war and the necessity for the pursuit of peace. Since her death the crane has become an international symbol of peace and her story has been told and retold in song, poetry, drama and prose.

Who will benefit from the Monday May 19th show?

1>   The ticket money will go to Corcoran School. It will help pay rents for rehearsal and performance spaces, for properties, costumes all materials, the occasional pizzas and snacks for our long days and for great staff. It also helps us with marketing, programs, copies and administrative materials like toner cartridges and binders… By having one or two benefits per year we can continue to grow our programs and maintain the excellent quality of our work and keep tuitions at a fair and reasonable rate.

2>     The Benefit on the 19th will also benefit The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation. It is a great organization with many programs to promote peace, and put an end to nuclear weapons. They really are doing a lot of good and I feel like their goals are in sync with the message of 1000 Paper Cranes. Their website is: www.wagingpeace.org  Check them out. All sales of cranes and goodies ( I am trying to get cotton candy) will go to this organization.

3>     There are 134 seats available for this show in this great space. It would be so amazing to sell it out. There are 17 students between the two classes. That means that if everyone sells 8 tickets we will be full!

4>     Please start talking up this show. We will have flyers soon and all the info and tickets are available on the website www.corcoranschoooftheaterarts.com.

5>     I am asking everyone to sell eight tickets.

6>     Tickets are $10 a seat and include all the fun pre-show activities (maki rolling, crane making, kubuki mask decorating and the after show party) and both performances and the after show party. Everyone in the family is invited to join and small children who may not make it all the way through can go out to the lobby and play until the After Show/Closing night party.
